Online Directing Course

Run exclusively for The Victorian Drama League

“The online directing workshop with multi-award winning director Chris Baldock, takes you through the entire directorial process from choosing the right play to opening night. Along the way you will discover the fundamentals of casting, rehearsing, dealing with actors and production personnel, creating and developing your vision, staging techniques, the audition process, discovering your text with the actors, creating a “pitch” for your play and everything in between. By the end, you will have many of the tools you need to develop a success directing career.”

Following our successful ‘Directing 101’ Workshop, Presenter, Chris Baldock of Mockingbird Theatre Company, has very generously offered to run the above course as a fundraiser for The VDL. Chris is a much respected director and producer with over 30 years experience and 100 directing credits to his name. He has won over 60 awards for his directing, acting and sound & set designs. His productions, actors and designers have won countless awards including his production of The Laramie Project winning the coveted Green Room Award for Best Independent Production.

A hugely popular version of this course has been run several times in Canberra in a face-to-face setting. Many participants have gone on to direct successful productions as well as gain entry into the NIDA and VCA Directing courses. The past two years of lockdowns have proven they can be just as successful online. Through his Mockingbird Acting Studio, Chris has also trained many actors to gain entry to NIDA, VCA, WAAPA, QUT, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Bristol Old Vic and many other established acting schools.

This fun, intensive and vital course will run for 10 weeks at 3 hours per session. Classes are capped at 10 participants and will be either Wednesday evenings or Sunday afternoons/evenings. The participants must ensure that they can commit to at least 80% of the classes and they must have a good internet connection. Classes will commence early/mid November. There will be a break for Christmas/New Year and will recommence mid-January at a date to suit all participants.

This course is perfect for ages 16+, for anyone from the absolute beginner to the rookie developing their skills, from the seasoned director wanting a fresh perspective to the actor/production personnel who wants a deeper understanding of the director’s job. The course is a great investment for companies wanting to develop members in this area.
