Synopsis
The idyllic Greek island of Hydra’s stunning turquoise-blue ocean has long had a magnetic effect on bohemians, artists, writers and musicians. During the 1950s and 60s, expatriate Australian writers, George Johnston and Charmian Clift, created some of their greatest literary works whilst living on the island for close to a decade.
Wild, passionate and ultimately tragic, their love story poses questions that everyone must answer, about the risks we are prepared to take; the cost of pursuing our dreams; and the depth of our commitments.
Weaving in text from Clift and Johnstons’ own writing, playwright Sue Smith brings these remarkable artists to life and traces both the personal and professional arc of the couple’s expatriation.
If Charmian Clift were alive, she would have recently turned 100. A year-long celebration of her life and art has recently begun in appreciation of her literary flair and skills.
