Synopsis
Following the closing arguments in a murder trial, the 12 members of the jury must deliberate, with a guilty verdict meaning death for the accused, an inner-city teen. As the dozen jurors try to reach a unanimous decision while sequestered in a room, one juror casts considerable doubt on elements of the case. Personal issues soon rise to the surface, and conflict threatens to derail the delicate process that will decide one boy’s fate.

Characters Description:

Fore-person:
Takes the title and role of 'Fore-person' as a responsibility. Concerned with how they, as an individual, are perceived in the role more than the outcome of the trial.
Juror 2:
Insecure. Trusts anyone else's opinion before their own. Only smiles out of discomfort- to be liked. Will agree with the last strong opinion given.
Juror 3:
40 and up
A cynic. Carries a lot of baggage and mistrust. Overbearing and opinionated as a defence mechanism. Would never admit it, but is angry at the world.
Throughout the play, confronts their inner disquiet and eventually grows to vote not guilty.
Juror 4:
40 and up
Stately. Leans on formality, refuses to engage in emotional discussion. Is concerned with the facts and maintaining decorum.
Juror 5:
Under 30
Grew up poor and is sensitive about their place and value in the world. Naive but takes the case seriously. Will speak up if pushed.
Juror 6:
30 and up
Quietly confident. Has spent life doing and thinking about things other than morality and justice. Has not deeply considered much of anything so far, but doesn't speak up needlessly
and is here to pay attention for the duration. Not incisive, but level headed.
Juror 7:
Under 40
Has a lot to say about anything. Saves time by making decisions before thinking. Talks for the sake of talking. Isn't overly interested in the deliberation.
Keeps it simple by not caring about anything that isn't in their immediate world.
Juror 8:
The moral compass. Has carefully considered morality and the nature of justice. Will go against the grain for what is fair. Level headed but is still vulnerable to their emotions.
Juror 9:
Over 60
Wise and weary. Sees and knows more than is offered to the group. He has seen and learnt a lot, but had little affect in life.
Juror 10:
An angry person. Taken in by anything that will make their anger feel justified. Demeans and levels anger towards anyone different, to avoid confronting their own fears and failures.
Juror 11:
An immigrant. Through experience has become considered and wise to the consequences of quick judgements. Doesn't speak before thinking.
Juror 12:
Affable by trade. Has the slick facade of a career sales person. Happy to work in a team, but doesn't see what all the fuss is about.
Guard:
A bit part. Secures the jurors in the jury room, and is their link to the outside world.

Whilst the play is entitled ’12 Angry Men’, unless specified characters could be played by any gender, age or ethnicity and with a desire to better represent Australian community in theatre, we are seeking performers from all backgrounds including BIPOC artists and artists of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, races, cultures, and genders to take part in this production.
