Synopsis

Summoned to a convent, Dr. Martha Livingstone, a court-appointed psychiatrist, is charged with assessing the sanity of a novitiate accused of murdering her new-born. Mother Miriam Ruth, the Mother Superior of the convent, is determined to keeps young Sister Agnes from the doctor, further arousing Dr Livingstone’s suspicions. Who killed the infant, and who fathered the tiny victim? Livingstone’s questions force all three women to re-examine the meaning of faith and the power of love, leading to a dramatic, emotionally charged and compelling climax.

Characters Description:

Dr Martha Livingstone - 40-50s Psychiatrist appointed by the court to assess Agnes's sanity. Intelligent and determined, she presents a tough exterior but struggles with her own personal demons. At times she is a fierce, hard-pressed investigator, and other moments show her as nurturing and protective. She is a chain smoker. Please note smoking will be mimed.

Mother Miriam Ruth - 60s The Reverend Mother of the convent and Agnes' aunt. She is very protective of Agnes and has her best interests at heart. Before becoming a nun, Miriam was married with two daughters. She is devout and quick to defend her beliefs and comes into conflict with Dr Livingstone during the investigation.
A strong and firm character.

Agnes - early 20s A novice nun who denies knowledge of the baby, and then later claims it was a virgin birth and the baby comes from God. Agnes looks and sounds angelic. She has an outward innocence and simplicity, but below the surface she is plagued by childhood abuse.
Singing ability is a must as she often sings hymns. Actor must be okay with fake blood.

Trigger warnings: physical and psychological abuse by a parent, sexual violence

Auditions will be by individual appointment, at 15 minute intervals.

Please ensure you have completed the Audition Form, which can be downloaded from the WLT website. Please also bring a non-returnable headshot.

Auditions will involve reading from specified sections of the script. There is no need to memorise anything for the audition.

It is necessary that you are familiar with the play and should know it well enough to be able to describe the "story". A copy of the script is available from the·director.

Please check you are available for all performance dates before booking your audition time. Please also inform the Director if there are any rehearsal dates on which you are not available. You must also advise if there is a possibility of you taking on professional acting work that may conflict with rehearsal and performance dates.

Routine rehearsals will be 7.30-9.30pm on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and 1.00pm-4.00pm Sunday
The first Read Thru will be on Sunday 23 July
Actors need to be able to commit unconditionally not only for an entire performance season but also for all scheduled rehearsals at which their attendance is required.
