Synopsis
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency by James Goss & Arvind Ethan David. Based on the novel by Douglas Adams. What do a missing cat, a computer genius, a professor of Choronology, the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, an impossible couch, Bach and pizza have in common? Well… not much. Until Dirk Gently sets out to prove the fundamental interconnectedness of all things by solving a mysterious murder, assisting a mysterious professor, and unravelling a mysterious mystery – not to mention saving the entire human race from extinction (at no extra charge, naturally) along the way. Based on the original novel by Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency was once described by Adams himself as “a thumping good detective-ghost-horror-whodunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic”. Confused? Don’t be – everything is connected.

Characters Description:
DIRK GENTLY
Stage Age: 25-45
A “holistic detective”, believes in the fundamental interconnectedness of all things. Eccentric, energetic and either
five steps ahead or behind everyone else, who knows?
RICHARD MACDUFF
Stage Age: 25-45
A coder, Arthur Dent to Dirk’s Ford Prefect. Forgetful, unobservant and stuck in his ways, but good-natured under
it all. Any musical instrument or dance ability is beneficial but not essential.
“REG” PROF. URBAN CHRONOTIS
Stage Age: 50-80
A long-serving Cambridge professor, though something doesn’t seem quite right on closer inspection. Sometimes
jovial and sometimes serious, a close-up magic enthusiast.
GORDON WAY
Stage Age: 30-50
An unconventional and enigmatic tech magnate, later: a ghost! An odd fellow, lost in his own world, demands a lot
of those around him.
SUSAN WAY
Stage Age: 25-45
Ricahrd’s intelligent and long-suffering girlfriend, also Gordon’s more capable and organised sister. The actor playing
Susan must be a competent classical musician. The original script calls for a cellist, but any instrument played well
will be perfectly suitable.
JANICE PEARCE
Stage Age: 25-45
Dirk’s embattled secretary, tough and sarcastic, a force to be reckoned with. Acts completely insubordinately, but
then again she hasn’t been paid in two months. May also take on one/some of the doubled parts.
MICHAEL WENTON-WEAKES
Stage Age: 25-50
Magazine editor, previously fired by Gordon Way, generally cranky and narcissistic. Also, possessed by an alien!
SERGEANT GILKS
Stage Age: 30-60
A plain-clothed police detective, infinitely more serious and professional compared to Dirk Gently. “Pip-pip
cheerio” accent, consistently exasperated by Dirk. May also take on one/some of the doubled parts.
ROLES TO BE DOUBLED
PERKINS - an ugly policeman, might as well be a goblin.
ALBERT ROSS - a magazine editor.
SARAH ANDROYD - a little girl.
MARVIN ANDROYD - Sarah’s father, a Cambridge “don” .
WATKIN - another Cambridge “don”.
GORDON’S HOUSEKEEPER - a bewildered old lady.
WAITRESS, BRIDE, GROOM, W EDDING GUESTS, DONS, GHOSTS, ALIENS - etc.
HORSE - a horse.
