Synopsis

An off-beat romantic comedy, Love Song by John Kolvenbach concerns a small family – the ruthless and uptight businesswoman Joan, her mentally ill and oddball brother, Beane and Joan’s husband, Harry. Following a burglary in his apartment, Joan is baffled to find her brother blissfully happy and tries to unravel the story behind Beane’s mysterious new love, Molly. This romantic comedy explores the infectious effect of love and the redemptive power of hope. Love Song opened at the New Ambassadors Theatre, London in December 2006 and was nominated for the 2007 Olivier Award for best new comedy.

Characters Description:

Note: All accents are American.
Beane
Something of a loner, and socially anxious. Quiet, invisible, and vulnerable. His world is suddenly transformed and he becomes energetic, joyful and passionate.

Molly
A force of nature: raw, passionate, and unfiltered. Impulsive and terrifying when she wants to be. She is a burglar and pyromaniac but her armour cracks and she discovers a warmth that transforms her.

Joan
Kind at heart, but over-worked and on edge. She is over decade older than Beane and a manager at a large company. Although she tries to help her brother, she’s easily distracted and irritated by her husband Harry. At her worst she is short-tempered and condescending.

Harry
Fastidious, well-meaning and logical. The straight man to Joan, and the object of constant reprimand. He finds himself in a bickering, routine marriage and doesn’t know how he got there.

Waiter: (only one scene, minor role that could also be played by Harry in makeup)
Male – Very small role – Playing Age: any age
