Synopsis

Set in 1990s Ballybeg, County Donegal, the play explores the relationship between the blind Molly Sweeney, her husband Frank and her ophthalmologist Mr Rice, who performs a successful operation to restore Molly’s sight. The play is related as shards of memory from each of the characters who recall the operation and the dramatic impact Molly’s sightedness had on all of them. While the two men believe the gift of sight would be nothing short of a miracle, Molly finds her new world threatening and overwhelming and withdraws from it.

This beautifully crafted story captures eloquently each character’s happy and painful histories, leading to an unexpected and very touching conclusion.
