12M (2 mid teen, 2 early 20s, 1 30s, 2 40s, 3 50s, 2 60s)
5F (1 x teenager, 1 x 20s, 3 x late 40s/early 50s)

Characters Description:

Stage Manager: 50s plus. Very large role, so would suit a very experienced actor who is exceptionally good at learning lines. Relaxed, confident, sage-like, unflappable and easy going. Must be instantly likeable to the audience, to whom he speaks directly for much of the play.
Dr Frank Gibbs: 50s. Town doctor. Caring but efficient. Rather unemotional, but not unlikeable. Dignified. Carries the burdens of the town on his shoulders.
Julia Gibbs: Late 40s or early 50s. Wife to the above. Pleasant and ultra caring. Fundamentally happy and settled. Perhaps a bit of a worrier.
George Gibbs: Early 20s. Must be able to play 17 years old in the first act. A genuinely nice young man – the sort any girl would like to take home to meet grandma. Polite, self-deprecating, modest. Lacking in self confidence.
Rebecca Gibbs: Early 20s. Meant to be 11, but will settle for someone who looks younger than George! Slightly annoying younger sister. Small role, but will find other things for this actor to do.
Charles Webb: 50s. Editor of the local paper. More knock-about than Dr Gibbs. The sort of man that would be great fun to have at a dinner party. Down to earth and realistic – with a keen sense for irony.
Myrtle Webb: 40s or early 50s. Efficient and organised, to the degree of coming across as a bit blunt or cold. Obviously devoted to her family. Moments of warmth reveal a very caring, though unsentimental person.
Wally Webb: Teen. Wally is 11 years of age. Small role. May double with Joe/Si Crowell.
Emily Webb: Early 20s. Must be able to play 16 years old in the first act. Major role. Very self confident. The best looking gal in town, and she knows it. Smart, sassy and pleasantly manipulative. Complex role – especially with the changes in attitude in act three.
Joe/Si Crowell: Teen. The local paper boy. Meant to be 11 years old, but could be any teen age. Joe and Si are brothers but can be played by the same actor.
Howie Newsome: 30s. Milkman. Not the sharpest tool in the shed, but a very pleasant young man. Rather serious, introverted type. Probably has never ventured out of Grovers Corner!
Professor Willard: 60s plus. Rather boring, stodgy type, but very enthusiastic about his studies and learnings. Addresses the audience in a lecture-ish kind of voice and mannerism. A bit fond of his own voice.
Simon Stimson: Over 40. Choir master. Has something of a reputation as a drinker and womaniser. Not a happy camper. As it says in the script, he ain’t cut out for small town life.
Louella Soames: 40s or 50s. The town gossip. Smallish but important role. Will provide some of the comic relief in the play. Role could be fun in the right hands.
Constable Warren: 60s. Well respected local cop. Knows everyone. Great influence, especially on the younger members of the community. Small role.
Sam Craig: Late 20s. Julia Gibbs’ nephew. Came for the funeral. Only appears in Act 3. May double with one of the other young male characters.
Joe Stoddard: 40 plus. The undertaker. Only appears in Act 3. May double with Constable Warren or Professor Willard.
All characters have a New England American accent.

All characters have a New England American accent.
Because the production involves under-age actors, cast and crew will be required to hold a current Working With Children Check.
