Synopsis

Christopher Hampton’s translation of Florian Zeller’s masterpiece provides an intimate glimpse into the disorienting world of André, an elderly man grappling with dementia. Set in his Paris apartment, the play artfully blurs the lines between reality and confusion, inviting us to experience the world through André’s eyes. The play is a powerful exploration of the impact of dementia on identity and relationships, taking a profound and sometimes disconcerting journey into the human mind’s fragility.

Characters

Acting Roles:

Andre: An aging man caught in the stages of dementia. He has been very independent and successful until his mind starts deteriorating. He has difficulty adjusting to his changing environment and the role reversals that come with family caregiving. Confusion and anger lead to some dynamic and powerful scenes. There are substantial lines associated with this character.

Genders: Male

Ages: 65+

Anne: André’s daughter. She is the only child left to decide for and help her father in his final years. She is carrying a heavy burden. Her own life is not an easy one. Genders: Female

Ages: 40-55

Laura: She is a licensed care giver. She prefers to do “in home” care as opposed to institutional care. She is compassionate and efficient. Genders: Female

Ages: 20-30

Pierre: Pierre is the romantic companion for Anne. He is her husband. But at times the script is as confusing as André’s mind as to Anne and Pierre’s real relationship. Genders: Male

Woman: This character will be perceived in some scenes as “Anne”. She needs to be compatible in size with Anne for that reason. She is a caregiver at the institution.
