At the heart of ART is a fundamental question of friendship, one that raises deep issues about truth, honesty, and human connection. The plot is simple, Serge buys an apparently pure white canvas by a fashionable artist for an eyewatering sum. His close friend Marc thinks he’s insane. Yvan, their mutual friend, tries to mediate and they both turn on him. It’s a laugh-out-loud funny play.
Serge buys an expensive painting – white lines on a white canvas. To Marc, the painting is a joke. Yvan is on the fence. Battle lines are drawn, and the trio use the ‘‘art’’ to settle scores and push their 15 year old friendship to the limit. A Tony Award winner for Best Play and an Olivier Award winner for Best Comedy.
